breathwork and pranayama - byron bay
"Without the breath, what is there? It's where you and I and everyone else began, it's where all life begins." - Wim Hof
Rebirthing Breathwork:
Known as the father of modern breathwork, Leonard Orr developed Rebirthing Breathwork in the 1970's, his lineage is continued by his wife Elvi Orr. The technique is a conscious-connected breath, merging a relaxed inhale and exhale. A transformative process to connect the mind, body and spirit. I discovered rebirthing breathwork in Melbourne and experienced profound energetic, emotional and physical body shifts via 10 personal sessions. I completed my training as a Rebirthing Breathwork practitioner and I've shared this practice with individuals and groups. This powerful practice uncovers and reduces dysfunctional breathing patterns and as breathing patterns shift, so do emotions, stored energy, memories and imprints. It creates space to uncover self-limiting beliefs and process and release stored energy, emotions and trauma held within the body. With a trauma-educated and nervous system-informed perspective, I have adapted the practice to be gentler on the nervous system while still providing a profound, powerful, and supportive experience.
Pranayama (yogic breathwork techniques):
Breathing is fundamental to our health, wellbeing and vitality. It is the fastest and most effective way to create change within the nervous system. I am trained in beginners and advanced pranayama yogic breathing techniques, using a krama (progressions) approach. Just like with yoga asana, we can't skip forward to the advanced level before first training in, strengthening and become comfortable with the basics. This supports a more regulated nervous system, increased vitality and life source energy. I completed a yoga teacher training with a strong focus on pranayama and I've continued and developed my practice with advanced Iyengar pranayama teachers.
Some of my favourite breathing techniques are:
33, 22, 11 through the nose and then the mouth (rebirthing)
20 conscious-connected breaths
Bhastrika followed by bahya kumbhaka (external breath retention) with maha bandha (three energy locks)
Anuloma Viloma
Brahmari
Ujjayi
Kapalabhati
I work with a range of clients, including those curious about the power and vitality of breathwork and breathing techniques, as well as individuals experiencing breathing dysregulation or nervous system-related conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, or a history of trauma.
I teach breath sessions to individuals and occasionally for groups, either in-person in the Byron Bay region or surrounds, or online Australia wide. I have also taught at events, retreats, festivals and my clinic space in Brunswick Heads.
